About Julius Schoonhoven
The Schoonhoven family business was founded in 1835. Julius grew up amidst antique gold, silver and works of art to become a clock maker and restorer/conservator of fine antique clocks and other mechanisms.
Early expertise was gained in the Netherlands, through training at the Christiaan Huygens-van t’Hoff clockmakers school, Zadkine College in Rotterdam, and De Knoop in The Hague. In 2000, post-graduate studies in West Dean College in Chichester provided a Diploma in Conservation and Restoration of antique clocks, awarded with Distinction. In 2001, Julius was awarded Clockmaker of the Year by the British Horological Institute and the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers, and won admission to the Freedom of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers. Now a member of the Institute of Conservation (ICON), Julius counts among his clients the National Trust, where he undertakes regular maintenance and conservation work on clocks at various properties around London (since 2004), and Historic Royal Palaces, including Hampton Court Palace and Kensington Palace, where he undertakes regular conservation work and repairs on locks and small metal works (since 2010). |
